Splatoon 3: Crab-N-Go #3: The Pescatariat

Exciting one! I was originally going to use some smoked salmon but guesss whoooo invested in a log of proper sashimi salmon while buying wobbly crab (hint: its me!)

Now as I mentioned before, im pulling back slightly on this recipe by omitting some ingredients so that we can build on it for the bigger sequel recipe and compare it to this more simple, pedestrian one.

Got some sushi rice i cooked earlier today! Can't have sashimi without sushi rice. Will season it a little bit with mirin mix and salt.

Now i'm using the same flatbreads we used for the crab trap, but this time we will attempt to roll them up..

...around a wide layer of lettuce leaf.

There's our rice and chopped avocado, nice

And a biig long chunk of salmon! And chopped leek because they were totally out of spring onion in the shops. Hmm this is going to be so... unflavoured... I don't really know what to dress it with, shall we just add a bit of wasabi? im adding a bit of wasabi.

**

Not bad not bad, still kind of plain though. It tastes very FRESH which is nice, and perfect for summer... But I regret not adding something like pickles or salad dressing to this. Why did I leave out the most flavourful fillings?

Splatoon 3: Crab-N-Go #2: Commercial Crab Trap Sandwich

Went all out for something a bit special for this one... I ordered from an online fish specialist... a soft shell crab!!! It's a crab you can EAT WHOLE, claws and all! Didn't know it was a thing, and at £9 for 2 its not exactly a value meal but its not out of budget for a bit of novelty.

Here's our star! Defrosted, dabbed dry and ready to fry, as well as our 2 other new ingredients: some black beans i've been soaking and a bit of lettuce. The prawns and yakisoba can be reheated from yesterday as I cooked extra, and ill do another egg and lemon slice.

A little dusting of flour and then I'll just pan fry 'er

This is a lot of stuff, so I'll just be trying to fill this sandwich as I go... hmm I don't trust these beans to stay inside. I wish i'd bought some softer tinned ones...

Now the lettuce, crab, yakisoba... oh christ how am I going to close this sandwich??

Oh geez we're still not quite done yet...

WHAT NOW???

****

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS?? Maybe i should have scaled down the fillings a little... but still, I feel like the new ingredients didn't really add anything to the already perfected crab trap jr. The whole crab was a cool novelty, sort of a cross between whitebait and crab meat... but I feel like its rare delicacy could be better appreciated on top of a salad and not buried in a tsunami of fried noodles and prawns.

(bonus pic of the chomps once i managed to eat it down to sandwich proportions)
After that... i am feeling SO FULL!!

Splatoon 3: Crab-N-Go #1: Crab Trap Sandwich

Alright its time to get our crab on and make the CRAB TRAP SANDWICH!!

Because the pairs of meals are extremely similar to eachother, I want to scope the initial one down a bit to add more ingredients in the second version... so if something seems missing... too bad.

We've got some flat bread, more ready to heat tempura prawns, a breaded "crab claw", a lemon, an egg, and some instant yakisoba. This is gonna be one crispy sandwich!

Going to cook this in a flatter pan than usual in a hope to fry off as much of the water as possible and maybe even crisp it up a bit.

Yeah we've got a lot going on here (the stuff in the oven pan is cooling)

I was all up in the air about what to use for the bread on this one. Arepas? Potato scones? Pitta bread? I opted for pitta bread in the end because those other ones are unreasonably hard to acquire. But turns out even the pitta bread was hard to find! They were FRESH OUT except for this one lonely pack of multiseed pitta. It's a decent shape and sturdiness so it should be fine.

It's gonna have to be fine because theres so much to stuff in here! Hmmm is it me or does it look a little dry...? Do you think we could put a cheeky bit of sauce in there?

Better! Squeezed the lemon, and added a bit of kewpie mayo and hot&sweet sauce. Now to add the egg and finish assembling.

*****

I've underestimated you, Marigold... if you can get past the sheer unwieldiness of this "sandwich" its crispy junk food heaven! I made a good call on the sauce as that added just the perfect amount of extra punch. The fresh lemon and prawns and yakisoba and egg and everything just go together sooo well.

Splatoon 2: Crust Bucket #6: Galactic Seanwich

Galactic Seanwich cranks it up another notch in the wacky department with a double dogg and some pincers sticking out the sides. Getting crab claws in this economy is a massive pain in the ass, but I did get something I thought would fit the theme fairly well - some breaded "crab claws" filled with surimi (fish meat)

Shoving the party food in the oven and frying the dogs.

Meanwhile the relishes have changed again! Went with pickle relish again for the green, and its got some sort of lumpy topping that I think could be interpreted as potato salad. And some little green bits, I was originally gonna get some chives but then I had some coriander right there in my flowerbed and that should be fine too.

Did a slightly better job than last recipe on the hot dogs, last time i experimented with frying them with a little water but they didnt brown half as well.

Now it's time for the fiddly bit. This ones complicated enough to warrant assembling with some toothpicks I think. Since I had an extra prawn I thought id shove it underneath to try and get a bit of a curve going on, but eh, everything's pretty crisp at this point.

****

Ridiculous transformer looking specimen. I didn't even bother attempting to eat this like a sandwich, i just disassembled and ate it with a fork. The potato salad was absolutely bangin' and overshadowed everything else, but everything else was good too. Better off just dipping some fried seafood and enjoying a nice p-salad separately though.

Splatoon 2: Crust Bucket #5: Super Seanwich

For the next seanwich, the bread bun is GONE!! its yesterdays roll, now the future of bread is PRAWNS and the future of filling is HOT DOGS

heres some hastily baked tempura prawns and fried dogs (im making myself 2 extra as a treat) if you think ive cooked these in the improper way please shame me on twitter and i promise not to indiscriminately enjoy any kind of attention. These prawns are so straight man this sandwich is gonna be rigid as hell.

A trio of sauces. Switching out the wasabi for pickle relish this time for a laff, and I forgot to get some proper squeezy mustard so we're going to slop on some wholegrain mustard and slightly watery ketchup. Presentation is my passion.

***

This loses 2 stars because it was so hard to eat the hot dog slipped right out between the prawns mid-bite and delivered 3 kinds of sauce all down my shirt and trousers. Flavour wise it was quite nice but again, probably because its 50% sauce.

Splatoon 2: Crust Bucket #4: Crusty Seanwich

Got some pre-made frozen tempura prawns this time. Crusty seanwich seems pretty simple, just a little tiny sandwich roll. I got some nice quality brioche because I think that looks the part.

We just pop these in the oven for a bit, and the rest is simple assembly.

The ketchup and mayo were a given, but theres a lot of things the little bits of green could be. Coriander? spring onion? pickle relish? But I kinda thought in keeping with the japanese/USA fusion vibe, why not some wasabi?

****

The prawn tempura is a little blander than the homemade ones I feel, but because of that the ketchup and wasabi went shockingly well with it? Kinda felt like more sauce than sandwich though.

Splatoon 2: Crust Bucket #3: Triple-Fried Galactic Shwaffle

Shwaffles part 3! The FINAL FORM!

Deceptively (though to the relief of my arteries) this one is still two waffles large. I'm also re-frying all the remaining prawns because we dont want them getting old (and yes its only been 3 days in the fridge not 6)

there, all fried up, but where did that other waffle go? well its already being prepped

the hot chocolate sauce, the iced cream, then we'll add the second layer...

and on the side i'm going to enjoy the remaining prawns in a more normal way, as a treat.

I don't have any squid shaped candies so im just opting for some rainbow sugar, as i think it will look nice.

***

This time I tried eating the toppings off and then eating the waffles and ice cream like a sandwich. A good method, I suppose... but still its just so excessively sweet and oily! I wanted to stay true to the spirit of the recipe, but i highly recommend you just dry-toast the waffles. tomorrow im having vegetables for dinner.
